One of the main purposes of establishing ASPO Canada is to focus attention on the finiteness/depletion rate of oil/gas and the consequences/linkage between fossil fuel depletion and CO2 emissions. The two problems are obviously global and also inexorably linked. We will, therefore meet both challenges or neither. In the meantime we may encounter claims from one or another country or region or state/province that their reserves of oil or gas or coal are so vast as to make for an unending bonanza of extraction. Even if we tried to proceed as though it were true (much is exaggeration), the result in greenhouse gases would be, in short order, a matter of global concern, and eventually, unacceptable. Every region’s long-term production prospects must be researched and made transparent, if only to avoid misjudgment and miscalculation. Canada is no exception. Our own oil/gas data and prognosis must be systematically analyzed and openly calculated. To that end, we have the excellent, excellent work of David Hughes, based on over 30 years experience with the Geological Survey of Canada. The following, in its considerable depth and detail, are examples of his efforts. |
